Preventing Split Ends and Breakage

If your ends are split or breaking (not just dry), you should get a trim... ASAP. Not only will this aid in the overall health and appearance of your hair, and make detangling and styling easier, you'll also feel motivated to care for your freshly trimmed ends. To prevent dryness, splits, and breakage, try the following:

1. Moisturize! On an as needed basis (for most, every 2-4 days), apply water, the ultimate moisturizer to your ends in order to open the cuticle. Follow up with a water based leave-in, conditioner, or moisturizer—you don't need much, just be sure to evenly distribute.

2. Seal! Next, apply a thin layer of a natural oil or butter, such as shea butter or castor, olive or coconut oil. This will seal in the moisture from the water and moisturizer.

3. Hide! Some folks, no matter how often they complete the first two steps, still experience dry crunchy ends. Protecting the ends in styles such as buns and pin-ups, may prevent them from drying out, and help you to retain length. I'm not a protective style girl, but I notice that allowing my hair to dry in a stretched style (twists, braids, rollers) really helps it to maintain moisture. Not sure of the science behind it, but hey, if it works, it works!

4. Deep Treatments! If you really want to see some length retention, engage in a hard core deep conditioning routine. My hair was at its healthiest in 2008. I applied a deep conditioning treatment (with heat) at every styling session—2 or 3 times a week. My ends were rarely dry, and they almost never split. Favs right now are Curl Junkie Rehab, Jessicurl Weekly Deep Treatment, and MyHoneyChild's Olive You. All of these are incredibly moisturizing and extra slippery! I often use the Curl Junkie to complete step 1 above as well.

Immediately after a micro-trim or search and destroy session, I always follow up with a deep treatment, or the first two steps above.

Remember that even without heat and color damage, our ends are very delicate... they're the oldest part of the hair and have been exposed to natural weathering and the wear and tear of styling. Always be mindful of your practices and how you handle your hair today, because you'll still be feeling the effects 2 years from now!

Natural homemade splitends remedy

Splitends control at home

Sometimes for many reasons the tip or ends of your hair may get split into. Why splitends on your hair? Because of harsh shampoos, damage due to direct sun, hair dryer, flat ironing too much, hair dyes, bleaching and not giving proper care to your hair.

If you already have split hair do a slight trim and do the following homemade tips to avoid further splits. Remember to keep hair healthy and treat it with great care.

Natural homemade ways to control splitends

Honey and olive oil is a good remedy for split ends. Mix 1 tsp of honey to 5 tsp. olive oil. Then add 1 egg yolk(if you do not like the smell of egg, then avoid egg). Apply this thoroughly on hair and scalp and massage well. Wrap hair with a hot towel. Do it for 20 min. Then rinse and shampoo well.

Avocado oil also can be applied to avoid splitends. Apply avocado oil on scalp and hair. Put hot towel. After 30 min. take a bath and shampoo well.

Split Ends

So Long, Split Ends!

Split ends—those feathery tips that make hair look dull and messy—are caused by everything from the weather to blow-drying and coloring. "Heat and harsh chemicals lift hair's protective cuticle layer, leaving strands susceptible to splitting," says Rodney Cutler of the Cutler/Redken Salons. The only cure is a good trim, but there are things you can do to prevent or temporarily heal frays.

→ brush this way

Instead of starting at the top, then tugging on the ends to get out knots, gather your hair mid-shaft (do a small section at a time) and gently brush out the ends first, Cutler recommends.

→ dry with caution

To help the cuticle lie flat, Cutler suggests using a heat-protecting product before blow-drying and pointing the nozzle downward. Finish with a blast of cold air to reseal the cuticle.

→ pull back gently

A fabric hair tie is best, suggests NYC hair stylist Sarah Potempa. Or choose a wrapped elastic without a metal closure, which can get caught in your hair. Also, apply conditioner where the tie will be—hydrated hair is less likely to split.

Natural Remedies to Prevent Split Ends

Natural Remedies to Prevent Split Ends

Split ends are a common problem that can occur in either long or short hair, be it dry, oily or normal. Hair tends to spilt when the hair shaft loses its natural moisture. The ends mostly split due to dryness, over exposure in the sun, frequent use of intensive hair care products like hair sprays, hair gels or hair colour. Lack of proper diet also tends to cause dryness in hair which might result in split ends.

Harsh hair products and lack of moisture can cause split ends

No matter how well you take care of your hair, some breakage and split ends are bound to happen. Trimming the split ends is not the only solution for getting rid of them. Listed below are some natural remedies and medicated ways to prevent split ends from occurring:

1. Mix a small amount of castor oil/ olive oil / almond oil into the oil you regularly use. If you wish to add all three of them you could do that as well. Make sure you oil the ends of you hair strands as well. This mixture not only helps your hair grow but it prevents your hair ends from discoloring. Massage your hair & scalp with warm oil and wrap your head with a shower cap and leave overnight or for 8-10 hours if you have time. Rinse well in the morning with a mild shampoo. Use this mixture to oil your hair atleast twice a week.

2. Alternatively, take half cup of oil in half cup of boiling water in a bottle and close it tightly. Shake vigorously. Massage this mixture thoroughly on your hair from root to tip and cover with shower cap. Leave it on for half hour, then wash. Be careful with your hands and head as the water is supposed to be hot.

3. Prepare a hair mask by adding a tablespoon of yoghurt in a mixture of 2 tablespoons of olive oil and 1 tablespoon honey. Massage on your hair thoroughly and then wrap your head with shower cap for half an hour. Wash using a mild shampoo.

4. A papaya pack is a great natural care for split ends. Take 2 big slices of ripe papaya. Remove the skin and the seeds of the papaya and blend it in a blender. Add to it half a cup of yogurt and apply thoroughly to your scalp and hair. Wash after 30 minutes with warm water. If you don’t have papaya you can used a ripe banana instead.

5. Grind 1tablespoon of methi (fenugreek) seeds with half a cup of urad daal to a coarse powder. Add half a cup of yogurt and mix well. Apply generously all over the scalp and hair. Wash after 2-3 hours with warm water.

6. Take 4 cups warm water and add 1 tablespoon of honey into it and mix well. After your regular shampoo and conditioning, apply this mixture all through your hair. Do not rinse again. This mixture not only makes your hair soft and gives a shine to them; it also retains the moisture content in your hair so that your hair does not look dry or frizzy. This is a home-made remedy that acts as a serum/conditioner for your hair.

7. Another home treatment for hair especially to counter split ends is a simple home-made shampoo . For this treatment, all you need is an ounce of rosemary, preferably fresh, a pint of hot water, and one tablespoon of yoghurt.  What you need to do is steep your rosemary in the hot water for about 20 minutes, then let it cool. Once it's cooled down, add a tablespoon of yoghurt into it and massage the mix into your hair and rinse, just as you would with a regular shampoo.

8. Mash an avocado and after getting your hair a bit damp, massage the fruit into your hair. Make sure you get your split ends coated. Let it set for anywhere between 15 minutes and half an hour, then rinse it out. You can add a tablespoon of olive oil for some extra sheen, if you like.
